On the topic of left vs. right and libertarianism
(My appearance on the Bob Murphy Show; October 31, 2020)
Often in polite discussion — and especially in heated debates — the political characterization of “being on the left” or “being on the right” is utilized. Considering the multitude of times we’ve heard these terms, they tend to be pretty hazy and ill defined, and many people seem to conflate them with being a Democrat or a Republican. (Ugh.) You probably know many people who claim to be centrists, whatever that means. I say that’s a copout. And this copout technique is used all the time by some pretty clever libertarians and Libertarians, who want to claim they’ve achieved some new ontological status as the “third leg of the stool,” politically. Some go so far as to characterize libertarianism as “socially liberal, but fiscally conservative.” Please don’t ever do that! It’s not necessarily true. I’ll explain why, and address numerous additional topics in this great discussion with noted Austrian free-market economist Bob Murphy.
